Bharatanatyam is a traditional dance style originating from Tamil Nadu in South India. Regarded as a precursor to other Indian classical dance forms, its fundamental components consist of Bhava (expressions), Raga (melody), and Thala (rhythm). Teaching Bharatanatyam involves conveying essential techniques like the Araimandi (half-sitting position), Adavus (basic dance steps), and Mudras (hand gestures), as well as focusing on the expressive aspect of Abhinaya (facial and emotional expression) and Ekaharya a characteristic feature where one dancer performs multiple roles in a single performance. An important aspect of this practice is the Guru-Sishya Parampara, which reflects the teacher-disciple dynamic where knowledge is shared through demonstration, tailored guidance, and mastering the dance's structured form, including an appreciation of tala (rhythm) and the philosophical and spiritual dimensions of the dance.
